We’re all about podcasts here at the Joy Factory.
We’re listening to them all the time when we’re editing, studying, at the gym, living our everyday lives. Heck, we used to even stream one of our own back in the early days.
Check out this list of excellent podcasts that we’re currently listening to and that we think you *need* in your life right now.
So much nerdy-ness in one blog post. It is too much, really.

Also known as 99pi, this podcast is Hope’s #1 favourite thing to listen to – mostly because of Roman Mars’ incredible, lush voice, and the fact that he delves into some of the most interesting topics on architecture, history, society, etc, etc, etc. It is all about the thought that goes into things we don’t think about – the unnoticed architecture and design that shapes our world.
Art For Your Ear By The Jealous Curator
Are you procrastinating and need to jump back into your creative vibes? Then this is the podcast for you. Before they are written about in art history books, contemporary artists are featured in this podcast with their gossip, motivations and behind the scenes information on their best works. Its a little bit inspirational, a little bit fun, and keeps you in the know on the contemporary art scene.
Mad About Movies
This should be your go to podcast for all things cinema related. From rants and raves to critiques of latest blockbusters, to in depth analyses of weekly movie picks, these three dudes who love films will definitely become your new best friends.
10% Happier with Dan Harris
Dan Harris is a fidgety, skeptical ABC newsman who had a panic attack live on Good Morning America, which led him to something he always thought was ridiculous: meditation. He talks to lots of interesting people, including the lead singer from Weezer, budding entrepreneurs, the Dalai Lama, and even an How I Met Your Mother actor about how meditation influences their lives.
Harry Potter & The Sacred Text
Calling all Harry Potter fans… This is the podcast you never knew you needed. It is the English class you didn’t know you missed and the meaningful conversations you didn’t know you craved. Going deeper into the storylines of J.K. Rowling’s best selling series, these podcasters give their listeners inspirational life lessons layered within all of that nerdy, magical good-ness.
The pinnacle of pod-casting achievement! WNYC’s Radiolab is what a big-budget podcast looks like! Er…sounds like. It focuses on science and technology, but each episode is incredibly fascinating and you really can’t go wrong. What may seem like boring subject matter is always made compelling by the Radiolab crew.
WTF with Marc Maron
Marc Maron is a fine comedian, but he’s almost unmatched when it comes to interviewing. Not every episode is fantastic, but if he happens to interview somebody you’re interested in, then it is bound to be an insightful interview.
T.S. is a chronological run-through of the entire series of the Simpsons. They go though the show episode by episode (currently they are at the start of Season 7) and explain all of the details that went into the making of that episode from the writing and jokes to the production and animation side of things. It gives you a much greater understanding of the greatest show of all time *cough cough* …until season 13 when it became almost unwatchable.
The Weekly Planet
Nathan’s #1 choice is the Official Podcast of ComicBookMovie.com where they talk movies, tv shows, comics and anything comic book related. Couple o’ Aussies having a fun ol’ time. Lots of Spoiler Reviews on popular movies. Nap Rating: 5/5
“Nathan’s go-to “podcast” for when accounting needs to get done. The epitome of background noise. The Monstercat Podcast has original electronic music from artists around the world.
The Jay & Dan Podcast
This one consists of stories from Canada’s favourite Sports Show Anchors, Jay & Dan from TSN. Some sports guests, some stories about growing up in small towns, weekly calls from Jeremy Taggert, the former drummer of Our Lady Peace. Nap Rating: 4.5/5
The Rooster Teeth Podcast
Company that makes the popular web-series Red Vs Blue. Nathan actually hasn’t listened to this in forever, but he needed to pick three. They talk about nerdy stuff and life in Texas… Maybe. Nap Rating: 3.5/5
Wild At Heart Podcast
Oh and one more, folks! This one is close to our hearts, as our dear friend Renee of Wild Sage Events has released her very own podcast to bring together the wedding planning community of the Thompson Okanagan. Its a digital place for community, education, and resources for couples who are planning their special day. We highly recommend that you check out her new passion project and send her a little bit of love!
That’s it, that’s all. The nerdiest – I mean neatest – podcasts out there right now.
And better yet, next Friday… we’re bringing back the good ol’ Joy Factory podcast series with a special edition featuring your beloved film fam – yes, it’ll be US… chatting in our office around a microphone… about “stuff”… STAY TUNED.
